MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS
1. How do I learn to use essential oils?
a. The Essential Life Book-my #1 go to reference book
b. Attend doTERRA Trainings with Dr. Hill or other company representatives
c. Other experienced oil users, including our doTERRA organization leaders
d. Educational Books, websites, etc. Message me for some of my favorites.
2. How often can I apply the oils?
There is not really a set rule for how often to apply the oils. Making a mental shift from how we view using western medicine is helpful. For many of the common issues/complaints applying/using the oils a couple times a day is probably adequate to see good results. Some problems may require more frequent application. Message me for specifics.
3. How do I know where to apply the oils?
That really depends on the complaint you’re trying to address. The sole of the foot may a good place to start. Applying oils to the bottoms of the feet has more pros than cons. Absorption is very rapid. Socks may help reduce the aroma of unpleasant oils like Oregano, etc. However, often it is better to apply directly to the area that is affected. For example, if you have digestion problems, like an upset stomach, apply the oils to the stomach, for a headache, apply the oils on the temples and hairline, for minor scrapes and cuts apply the right oil directly to the injured area. Keep oils out of your eyes and ear canals.
4. What combinations of oils are good to diffuse together, how do I know which oils to diffuse together?
The more you use the oils, the more comfortable you will be with which oils make good combinations. There isn’t really a bad choice. Start with combining Peppermint with Grapefruit or another citrus oil. There are hundreds of combos that smell wonderful. It ultimately depends on what results you desire. If someone has a cold, you may want to diffuse the Breathe Blend, On Guard Blend or Eucalyptus. If you need a calming environment, use the Serenity blend or even straight Lavender. Citrus oils are fantastic pick-me-ups.
5. Can I overdose on the oils? How do I know if I am using too much, or applying too often?
Moderation in all things is a true principle-less is more. doTERRA’s essential oils are very potent. Most topical applications are between 1-5 drops at a time. Internal/oral use is the same way. It doesn’t take much to achieve a desired result. I always say that it is better to use less per application and apply often than a whole bunch all at once. For example: To support my immune system I would use 2-4 drops of the On Guard Blend every other hour throughout the day instead of 15-20 drops all at once.
6. Are the oils safe to use on my children? Are they safe to use if I am pregnant?
Yes, they are safe! There are some essential oils that you should use with caution for children or if you are pregnant. Consult the Essential Life Book for a list of oils you may want to be more careful with. doTERRA has a line of essential oils that are specifically blended for kids and those with skin sensitivity. As always, consult with your physician.
7. Should I dilute the oils before applying them topically?
Because of the potency of the oils, I recommend dilution. Each person’s skin is different, and thus their tolerance or sensitivity to the oils will vary. Some oils are very mild, like lavender, and can be applied without dilution on most people. However, lemongrass and oregano do require some dilution. Start out by diluting the oils with fractionated coconut or other carrier oil. Or apply a small amount to the wrist. If it becomes uncomfortable, apply a carrier oil to help dilute it. Dilution is a good practice for young children. By using a carrier oil, the essential oil has a more sustained effect on the tissues as the carrier prevents the essential oil from “flashing off” or evaporating too quickly.
8.When applying multiple oils, do I need to wait between applying each oil, or can I apply one immediately after the other one?
You do not need to wait between application of the different oils, they can be applied immediately on top of each other.
